What is hydrostatic head and how is it measured?

A

Hydrostatic head measures a fabric's resistance to water penetration under pressure, expressed in millimeters (mm) — higher values mean greater waterproofness. The test (AATCC 127 / ISO 811) applies increasing water pressure to a fabric sample until water penetrates. Ratings: 1,500mm = water-resistant (light rain), 5,000mm = waterproof (moderate rain), 10,000mm = highly waterproof (heavy rain), 20,000mm = extreme waterproof (driving rain/storm). For outdoor jackets, 10,000mm is the industry standard for reliable rain protection.

Q

What is the difference between 2-layer, 2.5-layer, and 3-layer waterproof fabrics?

A

2-layer fabric has a face fabric bonded to a waterproof membrane with a separate hanging liner; 2.5-layer adds a printed protective pattern on the membrane interior (no separate liner); 3-layer bonds face fabric, membrane, and a tricot backer into a single fabric. 2-layer is the most affordable but heavier due to the liner; 2.5-layer is lightweight and packable but less durable; 3-layer is the most durable and highest-performing, ideal for extreme conditions. 3-layer construction eliminates the need for a hanging liner, reducing weight and improving breathability while maintaining structure.

What is UPF and what UPF rating do your fabrics have?

A

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) measures how effectively fabric blocks UV radiation — UPF 50+ blocks 98% of UV rays. Our UV-protection fabrics achieve UPF 50+ ratings through tight weave constructions, UV-absorbing fiber treatments, and titanium dioxide additives. Unlike sunscreen, UPF protection does not wash off or require reapplication. UPF 30–49 provides very good protection (blocks 96–97% of UV), while UPF 50+ provides excellent protection. UV protection is particularly important for outdoor apparel, swimwear, and children's clothing.

How do I choose the right fabric weight (GSM) for my application?

A

Fabric weight (GSM = grams per square meter) should match the end-use: 80–150 GSM for lightweight base layers and activewear, 150–250 GSM for mid-layer fleece and outerwear linings, 250–350 GSM for heavy fleece and softshell, and 350+ GSM for insulation and heavy-duty gear. Lighter fabrics dry faster and pack smaller but may sacrifice durability; heavier fabrics provide more insulation and durability but add weight. For multi-season versatility, 150–200 GSM is the sweet spot. We can recommend the optimal weight range based on your garment design and target market.

What is the difference between polyester and nylon fabric?

A

Polyester is lighter, dries faster, and resists UV degradation, while nylon is stronger, more abrasion-resistant, and has better elasticity. Polyester absorbs less than 0.4% moisture by weight, making it ideal for moisture-wicking applications. Nylon absorbs 4–8% moisture, providing better comfort against the skin but slower drying. For outdoor gear requiring durability (backpacks, tactical pants), nylon is preferred. For activewear requiring quick-dry performance (running shirts, base layers), polyester is the standard. Many high-performance fabrics blend both to optimize strength, drying speed, and comfort.

What is four-way stretch fabric?

A

Four-way stretch fabric elongates in both the lengthwise (warp) and crosswise (weft) directions, providing 360-degree mobility compared to two-way stretch which only stretches in one direction. This is achieved through power net knit constructions or high elastane content (10–20%). Four-way stretch is essential for compression garments, yoga wear, and performance base layers where the body moves in all directions. Our four-way stretch fabrics achieve 40–60% elongation with 90%+ recovery, maintaining their shape and support through repeated use.

What is bonded fabric and what are its advantages?

A

Bonded fabric laminates two or more fabric layers together using adhesive or heat, creating a single composite material with combined properties. Common configurations include face fabric + waterproof membrane, or fleece + outer shell for softshell jackets. Advantages include eliminating the need for separate hanging liners (reducing garment weight and construction complexity), improving wind resistance, and creating a clean interior appearance. Bonded fabrics are widely used in softshell jackets, skiwear, and performance outerwear where combining warmth, weather protection, and breathability in a single layer is desired.

What is ripstop fabric and why is it used?

A

Ripstop fabric incorporates a reinforced grid pattern of thicker yarns at regular intervals that stops tears from spreading, providing exceptional tear resistance at a lightweight. The distinctive grid pattern (usually 5x5mm or 7x7mm) is visible on the fabric surface. Ripstop is widely used in outdoor gear, military uniforms, and tactical equipment where lightweight durability is critical. Our ripstop fabrics use high-tenacity nylon or polyester with reinforcement yarns every 5mm, achieving tear strengths 3–5x higher than plain weaves of the same weight.

How many wash cycles do your functional treatments last?

A

Our functional treatments are rated for 30–50 home wash cycles at minimum, with permanent treatments lasting the garment's lifetime. Moisture-wicking finishes using fiber-level modification (not surface coating) are permanent. DWR coatings typically maintain effectiveness for 20–30 washes and can be reactivated by heat (tumble dry on low). Antimicrobial silver ion treatments last 50+ washes. Flame-retardant inherent fibers (modacrylic, aramid) are permanent, while treated FR may diminish after 50–100 industrial washes. We provide wash care instructions to maximize treatment longevity.

What is a softshell fabric?

A

Softshell fabric is a flexible, breathable alternative to hard shell jackets, combining stretch, wind resistance, water repellency, and light insulation in a single fabric. Typically constructed as a bonded fabric with a stretch woven face and a fleece or brushed backer, softshells prioritize comfort and mobility over absolute waterproofness. They are ideal for aerobic activities in cold, dry conditions where a hard shell would cause overheating. Our softshell fabrics offer 4-way stretch, 10,000mm water resistance, and 10,000 g/m²/24h breathability, making them versatile for hiking, skiing, and tactical use.

What testing standards do your fabrics comply with?

A

Our fabrics comply with major international testing standards including AATCC (colorfastness, moisture management), ASTM (tensile strength, tear strength, hydrostatic pressure), ISO (breathability, dimensional stability), and EN (flame retardancy, protective clothing). Specific standards include: AATCC 195 (moisture management), AATCC 127 (hydrostatic pressure), ASTM D5034 (tensile strength), ISO 11092 (RET breathability), EN ISO 11612 (flame retardant), and EN 1149 (anti-static). Test reports from SGS, TUV, or Intertek are available upon request for any fabric specification.

What is color fastness and what rating do your fabrics achieve?

A

Color fastness measures how well fabric retains its color after washing, rubbing, light exposure, and perspiration — our fabrics achieve Grade 4–5 (out of 5) on the AATCC gray scale. Grade 5 means no color change; Grade 4 means slight change; Grade 3 or below is noticeable fading. Our dyeing processes use high-quality disperse and reactive dyes with optimized fixation rates to ensure excellent color fastness across all parameters: washing (AATCC 61), rubbing (AATCC 8), light (AATCC 16), and perspiration (AATCC 15). For outdoor fabrics, we achieve light fastness Grade 5 (500+ hours exposure).

Can your fabrics be used for both apparel and non-apparel applications?

A

Yes, our functional fabrics are engineered for diverse applications including apparel, outdoor gear, military/tactical equipment, medical textiles, and industrial uses. The same fabric technology (moisture-wicking, antimicrobial, flame-retardant) can be adapted for different end-uses by adjusting weight, construction, and finish. For example, our high-abrasion nylon is used in both tactical pants and backpacks. Our flame-retardant modacrylic blends serve both protective clothing and transportation seating. We tailor the fabric specification to your specific application requirements and regulatory standards.

What is the difference between solution-dyed and piece-dyed fabric?

A

Solution-dyed fabric colors the polymer melt before fiber extrusion, embedding color throughout the fiber for superior light fastness and color consistency; piece-dyed fabric colors the finished fabric by immersing it in a dye bath, offering more color flexibility but slightly lower fastness. Solution dyeing is more color-stable (no batch variation), more environmentally friendly (uses less water), and provides excellent UV resistance, making it ideal for outdoor fabrics. Piece dyeing allows smaller MOQs (1,000m vs 2,000m+) and faster color changes. We offer both options depending on your performance and volume requirements.

What is a moisture management test and what do the results mean?

A

Moisture management testing (AATCC 195) evaluates how fabric handles liquid sweat through 5 metrics: wetting time, absorption rate, max wetted radius, spreading speed, and one-way transport capability. Results are graded 1–5, where Grade 4–5 indicates excellent moisture management suitable for premium activewear. One-way transport capacity measures how effectively moisture moves from skin side to outer surface — values above 50% indicate strong directional wicking. Our moisture-wicking fabrics consistently achieve Grade 4–5 with one-way transport exceeding 80%, meaning 80%+ of sweat moves to the outer surface within seconds.
